Many people have dreamed of getting into racing. If you are one of those people, then go kart racing might be the thing for you. Go karts are fun and relatively inexpensive, as racing goes. In this article, we will discuss some aspects of go kart racing and help you decide if this sport is right for you.

The best way to start is to go online and look for go kart tracks located near you. One site that lists some go kart tracks and features go kart racing news is GoKartDirt.com. There are different types of go kart tracks including dirt and paved tracks. Some tracks that normally feature stock car racing will sometimes host a go kart racing event.

Look at the schedule for a track in your area, and find an event that you can attend. You can watch the races and get some idea about go kart racing. Arrive early and enter the pit area. Ask some of the racers any questions you might have about the sport. It might be a good idea to take notes. You’ll find that most racers are friendly and glad to help you get started.

If you enjoy your experience at the go kart track and you think you would like to try it, the first thing you will need is a way to haul your go kart, tools, tires, and equipment. This can be anything from a pickup truck to a 40 foot trailer. Something in between would probably be the best for you. If your budget is tight, everything you need will fit into the bed of a pickup truck. I have seen open trailers, enclosed trailers, pickup trucks, old panel trucks, and just about everything used to haul go kart equipment to and from the race track.

Of course you will need a go kart. Many racers have begun racing what is called “Box Stock” or “Clone”. This refers to the type of engine used. These engines are very reasonably priced, starting at about $120. If you want to race Box Stock, you can get a go kart, engine, and tires, everything you need to race, for under $1000.

You will also need some safety equipment. A helmet is mandatory. Don’t skimp on a helmet. Make sure you get a safe helmet that has a snug fit. You also may want a driver’s suit, although this isn’t mandatory. Many go kart racers wear a good jacket. The point is to reduce abrasions should you come out of the go kart in an accident.

It would be a good idea to get into an early practice session so you can get some “seat time” before you actually start racing. Some tracks in your area may offer practice sessions during the week. You can certainly practice before any race.

Go kart racing is inexpensive, but if you really want to be very competitive, you will have to spend more money. How far you go and how much you spend is entirely up to you.
